Asst. Prof. Deign Frolley C. Soriano, of the Department of Biology, College of Science, University of the Philippines Baguio has earned an International Publication Award (IPA) for his collaborative research work entitled “Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) Assessment within the Batanes Protected Landscapes and Seascapes”! This research article highlights the importance of monitoring critical landscapes and seascapes in the country such as the Batanes Protected Landscapes and Seascapes. The study uses remote sensing technology to evaluate the environmental quality of these areas, which are vital biodiversity hotspots in the Philippines. It emphasizes the need for rapid and cost-effective assessment methods to gather crucial information for the conservation, protection, and management of ecosystems in the country. The paper was a collaboration with N. Doyog, R.I. Lumbres, and L. Talkasen of Benguet State University and has been published in the Philippine Journal of Science, Volume 152, Issue 5, pages 1753โ1767. ๐ฏ…๐ฎ…๐ญ๐ฒ๐ฌ! After a series of field works conducted throughout the semester, BS Biology students enrolled in ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐น๐ผ๐ด๐ ๐ญ๐ฒ๐ฌ (๐๐ฐ๐ผ๐น๐ผ๐ด๐) conclude their journey through the course by organizing a ๐๐๐ก๐ก๐๐ง๐ฎ ๐๐๐ก๐ . Each group creatively presented the data that they have gathered during their field work at Paraoir, La Union last 18th of May, 2024. Biology 160 is a required course under the BS Biology program in which students are introduced to basic ecological concepts and techniques used in the conservation and resource management of different environments. Through this course, we hope to inspire in students an understanding and appreciation for the environment, all the important interactions taking place in it, and finally, what we can do to address real-life environmental issues affecting human populations both locally and globally. We would also like to thank Avong Nen Romy Mountain Resort (Wangal, La Trinidad), Sir Idelfonso Adais (Sabkil, Itogon), Taba-ao Barangay and Kapangan Municipal Office (Amburayan river), and DMMMSU-Fisheries Research Training Institute (FRTI), North Luzon Campus (Paraoir, La Union) for continuously accommodating and allowing us to conduct these educational field work activities in their areas. The BS Biology Program is now AUN-QA Certified!

BS Biology is the 3rd undergraduate degree program of the University of the Philippines Baguio certified by the AUN-QA. This milestone is the result of the evaluation conducted last 12th-14th of March 2024 at UP Baguio, during the 378th AUN-QA On-site Program Assessment. Research Highlight: Anuran species found in Camp John Hay by DB Students
๐๐๐ฆ๐ฉ ๐๐จ๐ก๐ง ๐๐๐ฒ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ก๐จ๐ฆ๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ญ๐ก๐ซ๐๐ (๐) ๐ง๐จ๐ญ๐๐๐ฅ๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ (๐๐ง๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐ง) ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐๐๐ข๐๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ก๐ข๐๐ก ๐ก๐๐ฏ๐ ๐๐๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ง๐ข๐๐ข๐๐๐ง๐๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฅ๐จ๐๐๐ฅ ๐๐ข๐จ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ! Two (2) of these species are Luzon and Philippine endemics. The Luzon fanged frog is designated by the IUCN as a Near Threatened species indicating its vulnerability to endangerment. Meanwhile, the Diminutive Forest Frog is a species endemic to the Philippines but its exact identification is yet to be confirmed. So, its conservation status still needs to be clarified. These frog species show the importance of conservation efforts at Camp John Hay. Without our attention, they could be lost forever. Let’s work together to safeguard our wildlife and the pristine beauty of Camp John Hay’s ecosystem. DB Faculty receives two International Publication Award (IPA)
Prof. Zenaida Baoanan received not just one but two International Publication Awards (IPA) for her recent scientific outputs. Her first IPA resulted from her collaboration with the University of Hawaii at Manoa during her postdoctoral research on cone snails, conducted under the Fulbright-Philippine Agriculture Scholarship Program for Advanced Research in Agriculture. The second IPA is an output from her Cordillera Studies Center Faculty Research Grant with Prof. Karen Ballada, formerly of the Department of Biological Sciences and currently a faculty member at DMMMSU, Bacnotan Campus. CONGRATULATIONS Prof. Zenaida Baoanan and Asst. Prof. Deign Frolley Soriano are recent recipients of an International Publication Award (IPA) for their scientific contribution in environmental management and biodiversity work! The two members of the Department of Biolgy earned an International Publication Award for their study entitled: Biomass and Carbon Stock Assessment of Trees in the Lowland Evergreen Forest of Mt. Iraya, Batanes, Philippines. The paper was a collaboration with scientists from Benguet State University (BSU) and Batanes State College (BSC) and was produced as part of the Popularizing Access to Biodiversity Information Data and Conservation Opportunities (PABIDACO) project under the CHED-DARE TO Research Grant, with both members of the department being part of the project.
